In Spring 2005, FIELD published Opening Opportunities, Building Ownership: Fulfilling the Promise of Microenterprise in the United States, which not only offered an in-depth look at the industry’s performance and challenges, but also identified a set of eight directions that can move the field closer to long-term growth and stability. Since the publication’s release, FIELD has continued to encourage innovation around the eight directions by developing a number of new products geared to both practitioners and donors. (A section for Policy Makers is coming soon.) For details, see: Using the eight directions as a guide, a number of players in the microenterprise industry have begun taking action. FIELD Director Elaine Edgcomb reported on some of those activities in a May 2006 speech at the annual conference of the Association for Enterprise Opportunity, and in late 2006 FIELD updated progress made and actions taken by the donor community as well as by national organizations engaged in the industry. In addition, the December 2006 issue of the AEO Exchange featured examples of microenterprise programs that are taking steps to address the issues outlined in the eight directions.
